I just love the above quote from Simon Sinek, the author of "Start With Why."
If trust is low among people who work together, they’ll never become a harmonious, high-performing team. Most nurses have lived this experience in their clinical, academic, and entrepreneurial teams.
Having a high-performing team is the most important distinction between businesses that thrive and those that fail because when people are focused on stress management or survival they are not contributing their best work!
Simon Sinek calls this essential ingredient the 'Circle of Trust'.
The First Step in Creating a Trusting Team
As soon as a nurse entrepreneur has a product, program, or service that’s making money, their next step is to start developing a harmonious, highly productive TEAM that helps them increase their income and have more free time. This initial team does not need to be expensive - the members can be very part-time in the beginning.
I’ve been a nurse manager and an entrepreneur since 1984, and today I teach nurse leaders how to grow their business, increase their income, and develop their best teams. I always recommend that nurses start their Circle of Trust by learning to trust themselves. This is essential for success because when we try to be something we’re not, we set ourselves up for failure, and when we’re trying to lead a team from that place, it’s a recipe for disaster.
Likewise, when we know our own energy profile, we can choose teammates whose energy and strengths are complementary to ours - they pick up where our strengths leave off - and this helps us create more value and leverage in our business than we could on our own.
