In order to sustainably care for others, you must care enough about yourself that you make sure your basic needs are met. Why? If you don’t maintain your own basic needs, chances are that your resilience will wear thin and you will burn out, drop out, or get sick. Whatever form your depletion takes, you won’t be able to give the support you hoped to. Self-care not only helps you stay healthy, happy, and mentally balanced, it also expands your capacity for empathy and compassion for the person you want to support.
